Pledging a fraternity or sorority is not any easy task – pledging is a probationary and educational period of varying length (usually 5-10 weeks) during which a pledge is expected to prove his or her dedication to the organization to which they are pledged.
Pledging, though difficult, is not unpleasant. It is a time learning and gaining new social experiences. Pledges are expected to have unity and work together, forming life-long friendships with each other in the process. Also, pledges in most Greek organizations have a ‘big’ brother or sister, who is a current member of the organization who is there to help them in their journey to becoming a member themselves.
There are lots of Hollywood examples and urban legends about being a pledge, and nearly all of them are untrue or exaggerated. Theta Tau believes in a strict non-hazing policy and that pledging isn’t a time for humiliation or indignation, but a time for education and growth. In those cases where a pledge is made to work hard, it is for a reason that will serve them later in life and in their eventual membership in Theta Tau.
If, at the end of the pledge period, the pledge has demonstrated sufficient personal growth and dedication, that pledge will be initiated into a full member of the fraternity or sorority as an equal.
